The 28-year-old leader of Team LottoNL-Jumbo was third in the general classification going into the challenging 136km final stage, but finished fifth on the day and was pushed down the rankings by fast-finishing Frenchman Thibaut Pinot.

In the final stage in and around Bukowina Tatrzanska in southern Poland, Team LottoNL-Jumbo rode aggressively, with Enrico Battaglin and Floris De Tier successfully launching Bennett for his attacks on the penultimate and final ascents.

Team director Grischa Niermann said it was frustrating not to be able to secure a podium finish.

"But with more explosive riders like Pinot, you know that this chance isn't big, especially with time bonuses at the finish.

"George rode very offensively and showed that he was the strongest climber in the race. The team was strong and showed themselves well all week - they did everything they could."

Bennett is using the Tour of Poland as preparation for the Vuelta a Espana later this month, and Niermann said Team LottNL-Jumbo's results gave them plenty of confidence for the 21-stage Spanish tour, which begins on August 25.
