He cannot play international or state cricket after his "leadership" role in the incident in South Africa in March.

Smith's ban does not extend to competitions outside Australia and he returned to competitive action in Canada in June.

The 29-year-old will play for Barbados Tridents in the CPL in place of Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan.

Tridents coach Robin Singh said the loss of Shakib had been a huge blow to the team.

"But in Steve Smith we have a truly world-class replacement who can help to bring power to our batting lineup," Singh said.

"As a man who has played cricket at the highest level all over the world we are very confident that Smith will be a big success with the Tridents."

Smith, who is still the top-ranked test batsman, has scored 3124 runs in all Twenty20 cricket, including a century and 11 fifties, and has played 64 tests, 108 one-day internationals and 30 T20 internationals for Australia.

He will play alongside New Zealander Martin Guptill at Barbados.

The Tridents get their season underway on August 12 with an away trip to the Guyana Amazon Warriors, who include former Black Caps keeper Luke Ronchi in their squad.

They then line up five days later against St Lucia Stars, who have New Zealanders Mark Chapman and Mitchell McClenagahan in their ranks.

The Tridents meet the Jamaica Tallawahs in Lauderhill, USA then tackle a run of five matches at home between August 25 and September 2.
