Windies captain Kraigg Brathwaite put the Black Caps in to bat after winning the toss but his attack failed to make any early in-roads in bright and warm conditions at Seddon Park.
Openers Tom Latham and Jeet Raval put on 65 before Latham was caught behind just before lunch on 22 attempting to hook Miguel Cummins.
Captain Kane Williamson looked to be building a formidable partnership with Raval before he also fell caught behind to Cummins on 43 about half an hour before tea.
Raval knicked a ball from Shannon Gabrile through to the keeper soon after for a well compiled 83 as the West Indies seized back the initiative in the afternoon session.
The Black Caps went to tea at 173 for three with Ross Taylor on 9 with Henry Nicholls on 5.
