The Cavs small forward was sent off after arguing with referee Kane Fitzgerald about a no-call late in the third quarter, following a drive to the basket against his old team.

Fitzgerald gave James a technical foul and then ejected him with 1 minute 56 remaining in the quarter.

It was the first time in his 15-year career that he had been sent off.

The 32-year-old veteran, who led Cleveland to its first NBA championship in 2016, managed 21 points, 12 rebounds and six assists in the game.

The win over the Heat was Cleveland's ninth straight victory, after starting the season poorly losing six of their first 10 games.

In Tuesday's other matches, the Washington Wizards beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 92-89 and and the Phoenix Suns scored a 104-99 victory over the Chicago Bulls.

Utah plays Denver and Sacramento meets Milwaukee in the day's late games.
