Durante told his New Zealand teammates the news following last week's World Cup qualifying loss to Peru in Lima.
The 35-year-old, who switched allegiances from Australia to New Zealand, played 24 matches for his adopted country since his debut in 2013.
"I have (retired from international football), I just didn't need it to be an official announcement or anything. After the game I said to the players that it was my last international so I won't be continuing on," Durante told media at today's Wellington Phoenix media session.
"It's a whole new cycle coming in now and I will be 40 playing at the next World Cup so I decided it was my time to go."
Durante will return for the Phoenix's A-League match against the Central Coast Mariners on Saturday.
