Tim Southee needs to prove he's a Test cricket quality bowler come the second Test against Australia starting in Hamilton tomorrow.

That's the hard word from on high - New Zealand captain Dan Vettori.

An injury to Darryl Tuffey has given Southee a reprieve for tomorrow's second test in Hamilton with Vettori saying Southee didn't bowl well in the ten wicket loss to Australia at the Basin Reserve.

The Black Caps bowlers only managed to dismiss four Australian batsmen with Southee going wicketless and Vettori's warned the 21-year-old Northern Districts fast bowler he needs to find his wicket taking form.

Vettori says Wellington off spinner Jeetan Patel will replace Tuffey with Northern Districts teenager Kane Williamson set to be12th man.
