Michael Venus has fallen just short of becoming the first New Zealander to win two grand slam tennis titles in the same year.
Venus and his mixed doubles partner, Hao-Ching Chan from Taiwan, were beaten 1-6, 6-4, 8-10 by top seeds Jamie Murray and Martina Hingis in the US Open final this morning.
The French Open doubles champion and Chan made a sluggish start, dropping serve early and never able to get a foothold in the opening set.
However they fought back in the second set and traded service breaks before breaking again to take the set and force a deciding super tiebreak.
It was tight all the way in the first to 10 points with Murray and Hingis prevailing to add the US Open title to the Wimbledon title they won in July.
Venus and Chan will share $70 thousand US dollars for finishing runners up.
The 29-year-old will now turn his attention to his doubles bid to qualify for the year end ATP World Tour Finals in London over the next few weeks.
Venus and partner Ryan Harrison are 7th in the race to be one of the top eight doubles teams to play at the O2 Arena in November.
