The New Zealand Rugby Union's chief executive Steve Tew says there's no way they could have matched the sort of money that's kept Carl Hayman in Europe and out of a return to the All Blacks.
Hayman. who's regarded as the world's best tighthead prop, confirmed overnight that he's sgned the French club Toulon for a reported $2 million dollars over two years.
Tew says the NZRU is as competitive as it can be but has to be careful with money, even when
chasing hard to replace players such as Hayman.
He says despite that the All Blacks haven't falen over in Hayman's absence and ther players who stayed now get another chance to prove themselves,.
