Ko, who hasn't won in more than a year, shot a one over par 73 at the Kingsbarns Golf Links to put her in a tie for 93rd.

She made a solid start to the round and was one over after five holes, but followed her only birdie with two straight bogeys before making 11 straight pars to end the round.

The 20-year-old will want to make more of her opportunities in the second round after hitting 12/14 fairways and 14/18 greens, but requiring 33 putts to complete the 18 holes.

Ko's is nine shots behind the leader, her playing partner Michelle Wie of the United States.

A number of players are yet to finish their opening rounds after play was halted due to lightning.
