The New Zealanders drew nil-all with Vietnam in their opening game and play group favourites France in their last game.

This morning's result has given New Zealand a great chance of progressing to the knockout stages.

Going into the clash, New Zealand had tasted victory at this tournament on only one previous occasion - a 5-1 success over Myanmar on home soil two years ago - but needed to claim a second to put themselves in a good position to go through.

Myer Bevan scored in the opening minute, Hunter Ashworth got the second in the 23rd minute and Bevan scored his second from the penalty spot in the 56th minute.

The result means New Zealand is now second in Group E on four points, which is usually enough to make it past the group stages of this event, especially with the four best third-placed teams also going through to the round of 16.
