Canterbury has won the Plunket Shield championship on the last day of the first class cricket season in somewhat bizarre circumstances.

The championship went down to the wire with both the Auckland Aces and Canterbury in contention.

The Wellington Firebirds beat table leaders Canterbury in Christchurch by seven wickets.

That result meant if the Auckland Aces beat the Central Stags in Napier, they would defend their title.

Auckland set the Stags 301 runs to win and a 130 from George Worker set them up nicely.

The Stags won by 3 wickets and Canterbury finished the season with the most points.
