After being beaten by England in the quarter finals, New Zealand went on to beat Australia 21-nil in the fifth place semi final.

The side went unbeaten through pool play with wins over Russia, Scotland and hosts Canada, but they could not replicate those results against an England side, that qualified second from their group.

Championship leaders South Africa were beaten 19-7 by England in the final, while Fiji took bronze with a 28-24 victory over the United States in the third- place play-off.
