Super sub Wayne Rooney came off the bench to ensure the Manchester United football club retained the Carling Cup by scoring the winning goal in United's 2-1 victory over Aston Villa at Wembley Stadium.

The England striker scored with a superbly executed header after 74 minutes for his 28th goal of the season as United became the first team since Nottingham Forest in 1989 and 1990 to win the cup in successive seasons.

Rooney was almost left out of the team due to a knee injury but the 24 year old once again proved the difference for United.
