The All Blacks have suffered another selection headache in their lock combinations with Luke Romano returning home from Chicago for a family bereavement.

Romano was set to start for the All Blacks in this weekend's test against Ireland in Chicago with Patrick Tuipulotu as usual starters - Sam Whitelock and Brodie Retallick, are out injured.

The All Blacks selectors may now have to call on uncapped players Scott Barrett and Vaea Fifita, or Steven Luatua who hasn't played for the All Blacks since 2014.

Assistant coach Ian Foster says the squad will cover Romano's absence.
