Swiss athlete surprise winner in men's downhill

Switzerland's Didier Defago has beaten his more fancied team mates to win gold in the showcase men's Olympic alpine skiing downhill event in Whistler.

Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal took the silver medal and American showman Bode Miller won bronze on a day when the big pre-race favourites ended up as also-rans.

With his team mates Didier Cuche and Carlo Janka failing to match his time, Defago became the first Swiss to win a men's Olympic skiing title since Pirmin Zurbriggen in Calgary in 1988.

The event was originally scheduled to take place two days ago, but adverse weather conditions hampered the staging of the men's downhill and training for the women's super-combined skiing event.

There was no defending Olympic champion, with France's Antoine Deneriaz retiring since his surprise gold in Italy and world champion John Kucera of Canada absent due to injury.
