A couple of New Zealand athletes will be looking to cement their Commonwealth Games status at the New Zealand Combined Events Championship in Hamilton this weekend.

Heptathlete Rebecca Wardell is looking to score over 6000 points.

She bettered the Games standard of 5800 points three weeks ago in Christchurch and wants to eclipse her personal best of 6108.

Decathlete Brent Newdick says he wants to confirm his Commonwealth status and is looking forward to competing against three Japanese athletes.

At the same place the Porritt Classic meeting on Saturday night will feature the first competition of the season by Olympic and World shot put champion Valerie Vili.

The Classic will also welcome sprinter Monique Williams back to her first track outing of the season after recovering from an Achilles tendon injury.
