Breakers' season ends despite final dash

10:48 am on 14 February 2010

The New Zealand Breakers have missed out on making the Australian basketball league finals on the penultimate night of the regular season.

The Breakers won 84-79 at Cairns, their sixth straight win and the longest winning streak in this season's competition - but thanks to Gold Coast winning at Melbourne, the New Zealand side misses out on a top four place and the post-season.

The Breakers won 15 and lost 13 to finish their regular season program with the win over the Taipans their sixth straight - the longest winning streak of the closest competition so far.

But the Breakers still finished fifth after Gold Coast completed their campaign with a 91-73 away win over Melbourne.

The Hawks guaranteed their top four finish with an 82-79 overtime away win over bottom of the table Adelaide, while Perth and Townsville both will clash in Perth later on Sunday, with the winner finishing top of the table.

That result will also determined the final placings in the top four heading in to the finals.
