New Zealand Rugby says it's doing all it can to keep former All Blacks coach Wayne Smith in the game in New Zealand.

Smith is taking a break from rugby after helping the All Blacks to the World Cup title last year.

There have been reports that Smith is being chased by a number of overseas clubs, but is yet to make a commitment about his future.

NZ Rugby chief executive Steve Tew says they're not going to let him go easily.

"We're keeping a close dialogue with Smithy and we're hopeful of him staying and playing a part in the future."

"In Wayne's case he wanted to have a break from the game so we're been mindful of that, but clearly he is highly sort after."

"We've made sure he knows how much we love him and how much we want him to be involved in the game at whatever level that may be in the future."

There were reports that Smith was sounded out about the England job as well as the Harlequins club coaching position.
