South Africa had a comfortable lead early in the game, ahead 14-7 at half time, then climbing to 21-7 just a few minutes before the end.

But the All Blacks Sevens edged full-steam ahead and smashed it out to win the final 24-21.

The result moves New Zealand from seventh to third in the standings behind South Africa and Fiji, with the series moving to Sydney next weekend.

NZ goes from strength to strength

New Zealand reached the cup final of the Wellington Sevens after beating England 25-5 in the semi-finals.

The All Black Sevens started the semi final at a furious pace, with Ben Lam running in two tries before Sonny Bill Williams crossed the line late in the first half.

Kurt Baker and Rieko Ioane scored second half tries for New Zealand to put the result beyond doubt.

South Africa made it into the finals after beating Fiji 31-0 in the other semi-final.
