Golf Open leader playingto the fans

The 24 year Robert Gates from Florida is in unfamiliar territory as the halfway leader at the New Zealand Open golf championship, his debut event on the Nationwide Tour.

After adding a 67 to his opening round of 65, Gates said he was lapping up the attention and support of the fans following him round The Hills course in Arrowtown.

Gates is 12 under par, one stroke ahead of the Australian Andrew Dodt with another American DJ Brigman third at 9 under par.

The leading New Zealander is Philip Tataurangi on 7 under par in a tie for 6th, while Josh Geary and Bradley Iles are 6 under par, tied for 13th.
