New Zealand will compete in the biathlon for the first time at next month's Winter Olympics, after biathlete Sarah Murphy was confirmed in the national squad to travel to Vancouver.

The 21-year-old had been selected to the team pending a quota spot being allocated from the International Federation, which was verified overnight.

Murphy's inclusion in the squad brings the final number of athletes to 16 - the largest number of individuals to ever represent New Zealand at the Winter Olympics.

The Vancouver Games get underway on February the 12th.
