Breakers still alive in NBL

12:35 pm on 29 January 2010

The New Zealand Breakers' playoff hopes in the Australian basketball league remain alive after a third straight win, beating the Crocodiles 91-86 in Townsville.

It was an even affair for most of the night with the Crocodiles in front 40-39 at half-time.

But the visitors pulled out the big shots late in the final quarter when it mattered most, guard CJ Bruton knocking down two three-pointers and Kirk Penney closing out the game with another from outside the arc.

Penney again top-scored for the Breakers with 20 points, their Australian big Oscar Forman contributing 19.

Peter Crawford notched a game-high 21 points for the losing home side.

The Breakers have two home games and one away remaining. They must win at least two to have any hope of a post-season but with the sudden turnaround in their form - the latest win their second against a top four team in a week - hopes of a playoff spot must be lifting.

In the night's other action, the Tigers beat the Adelaide 36ers 95-85 at home in Melbourne to maintain their even slighter playoff hopes.
