Kirsten Pearce scored first for the Black Sticks as they trailed 2-1 at half-time at College Park.

Then Gemma Flynn equalised with a drag flick from a penalty corner, before Olivia Merry struck the match-winner with three minutes left.

The two teams now head to Nelson, where they play on Tuesday, ahead of the final clash in Christchurch on Friday.

Merry said her side will still be looking for improvements going into their third game.

"It's always good to get a win and it's pleasing to see improvements in some areas of our game," said Merry, who is due to play her 100th Test this Friday.

"But we just need to get better at playing the full four quarters well, and probably still need to be better structured."

The Black Sticks men also play in Nelson, where they face India twice on Tuesday and Wednesday, then they again play twice in Christchurch on Friday and Saturday.
