Central Districts coach censured for remarks

1:51 pm on 9 January 2010

The Central Districts cricket coach Dermot Reeve has been censured and fined $750 for his remarks which alleged ball-tampering by Auckland 's English import player Ravi Bopara.

New Zealand Cricket Chief Executive Justin Vaughan initiated a Code of Conduct hearing to determine whether the comments made by Reeve after a one day match in December were prejudicial to the game in New Zealand or brought the game into disrepute.

In a hearing this week Commissioner Roger Mori determined that Reeve's comments constituted a breach of the Code of Conduct.

The Commissioner noted that Reeve's actions were not malicious and were motivated by a desire to prevent ball-tampering in future cricket matches; however his action in involving the news media was misguided and inappropriate.

The finding is subject to appeal.
