Australian opener falls in nineties again

5:50 pm on 5 January 2010

The Australian all-rounder Shane Watson's troubles in the nineties continued when the opener made 97 in the second cricket Test against Pakistan at the SCG.

Australia were fighting hard at 199 for 3 in their second innings at tea on day three, still trailing Pakistan by seven runs.

Mike Hussey, dropped on 27, was unbeaten on 35 with Michael Clarke 14 not out.

Watson reached 97 with a brilliant drive to the cover boundary but fell next ball, caught at second slip as Umar Gul (2-41) hit the all-rounder on the gloves.

It was Watson's third dismissal in the nineties this summer, having scored his maiden Test hundred in Melbourne against Pakistan last month thanks to a dropped catch on 99.

Australia were bowled out for 127 on the opening day's play after Ponting made the controversial decision to bat first on a grassy pitch in humid conditions.
