It'll be McKenzie's first start of the season in the No.10 jersey when the Chiefs meet the Western Force in Hamilton on Friday night.
The Chiefs coach Dave Rennie has made several other changes to his side bringing prop Siate Tokolahi into the starting line up as well as loose forward Johan Bardoul who'll replace Liam Messam due to the All Blacks' rest requirements.
The lock Matt Symons takes over the captaincy duties in place of Messam.
Tim Nanai Williams moves to the left wing with Bryce Heem starting on the right wing.
Ben Tameifuna moves to the bench and is joined by Damian McKenzie.
