The Team Target driver finished ahead of Helio Castroneves in second with Juan Pablo Montoya third.

Dixon, a three-time Indy Car series champion, told ESPN winning at Long Beach fulfils a lifelong ambition.

"I still can't believe we've won here at Long-beach, it's such a memorable and such a worthy track. I'm just so stoked, there's so many Target people here today too, it's one of their events, and just fantastic, I can't believe we've done it."

The win lifts Dixon from 11th to 4th in the drivers championship after three races.

"I like coming here, I love the event.

"All in all, this is huge. Long Beach, I finally get to crack this one and I'm really happy."

Montoya leads the standings, 32 points ahead of Dixon.
