The Pakistan cricket side was 39 for one in reply to Australia's 454-5 declared not long after tea on the second day of the first test in Melbourne.
Australia declared its first innings closed halfway through the second session after an entertaining innings of 75 by Nathan Hauritz, who became one of his country's most successful nightwatchmen.
Hauritz became the fifth Australian batsman to post a big score in the innings after Shane Watson made 93, Simon Katich 98, Ricky Ponting 57 and Mike Hussey 82.
Only three other Australian nightwatchmen have scored more than Hauritz in a test innings.
