Chelsea will remain top at Christmas after Fulham inflicted a fifth league loss of the season on the injury-hit English Premier League football champions Manchester United.

Fulham's shock 3-0 win at Craven Cottage came through goals from Danny Murphy, Bobby Zamora and Damien Duff.

Arsenal are third after thumping Hull City 3-0 in London but Liverpool's miserable season hit a new low as Javier Mascherano was sent off in a 2-0 defeat away to bottom of the table Portsmouth.

Manchester City defeated Sunderland 4-3 in a thrilling game at the City of Manchester Stadium, but that wasn't enough to save manager Mark Hughes's job. He's been replaced at the world's richest club by former Inter Milan boss Roberto Mancini.

Aston Villa continued their push for a top four spot with a 1-0 win at home to Stoke City, while fellow European contenders Tottenham Hotspur - fresh from their 3-0 midweek win over Manchester City - beat Blackburn Rovers 2-0 thanks to two goals from England striker Peter Crouch.
