Swimming Australia stands down head coach

1:56 pm on 8 December 2009

Swimming Australia has stood down national coach Alan Thompson while it investigates an accusation of inappropriate behaviour made against him.

SA says Thompson has agreed to take personal leave while it looks into the claim.

SA chief executive Kevin Neil says the matter is not connected to allegations that late coach Terry Buck sexually abused a number of swimmers.

Neil says the allegation against Thompson is not a criminal matter and does not involve assault.

He says SA will appoint an independent investigator to examine the allegation.

Meanwhile, SA says it will look to appoint current Australian youth team coach Leigh Nugent as interim head coach while the investigation is conducted.

Nugent has previously held the head coaching position, his tenure having included the 2004 Athens Olympics campaign.
