Brazil reject being referees favourite

The Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari is rejecting claims they were favoured by the referee, praising striker Neymar after he scored twice in a 3-1 win over Croatia in today's football World Cup opener.

Scolari says his team showed great character after bouncing back from an early own goal.

Croatia's coach Niko Kovac was furious about the award of the penalty when the scores were level at one all saying the World Cup could become a circus if Brazil continues to get favourable calls.

Scolari, who said he agreed with the call, responded by reminding Kovac that Brazil has won the World Cup more times than any country and did it without any help from referees.
