Test match cricket back in Christchurch

6:43 pm on 3 June 2014

Christchurch will host its first cricket Test in eight years after New Zealand Cricket confirmed Hagley Oval will be the venue for this year's Boxing Day Test between New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

The two sides played the last Test in the city at Jade Stadium in 2006, while the Boxing Day Test will be the first in the country for 11 years.

New Zealand Cricket's head of cricket Lyndsay Crocker says the pitch will provide good pace and bounce.

Hagley Oval will also host a one-dayer against Sri Lanka. The ground will also host the opening match of the World Cup.

The home international season starts in October with three one dayers against South Africa, two of them at the new venue of Bay Oval in Tauranga.

In December and January, Sri Lanka play two Tests and seven one-dayers and Pakistan play two one-dayers.
