The All Blacks first five Aaron Cruden is back in the Chiefs starting lineup, as the defending champions seek to rescue to their Super rugby season.

Cruden who suffered a broken thumb against playing against the South African side the Cheetah early last month had his first game back last weekend when he came off the bench late in the loss to the Hurricanes.

His return to the starting XV means Gareth Anscombe drops to the reserves in one of several changes coach Dave Rennie has made as the Chiefs try and regain their place among the top six playoff spots.

The other changes have Jamie Mackintosh starting at prop and Matt Symons at lock.

Liam Messam returns to blindisde flanker while Liam Squire starts at No.8.

Andrew Horrell comes in at second five-eighth and Tim Nanai-Williams moves to centre.

Pauliasi Manu, Mike Fitzgerald, Tanerau Latimer, Gareth Anscombe and Bundee Aki all move to the reserves.
