The owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, Donald Sterling, has been banned for life and heavily fined by the NBA over the racist comments he made that sparked outrage in the United States.

The NBA Commissioner Adam Silver fined Sterling the NBA maximum $US 2.5 million and banned the 80-year-old billionaire from attending any NBA games or practices, being present at any Clippers office or facility, or participating in any business or player personnel decisions involving the team.

Silver says he will urge the Board of Governors to exercise its authority to force Sterling to sell the Clippers team.
