Young Football Ferns upset Paraguay

The New Zealand under-17 women's team have drawn 1-1 with Paraguay in their opening World Cup clash in Costa Rica, ending a six-match losing streak at the FIFA tournament.

Having dropped all three matches at the previous two tournaments, held every two years, in Azerbaijan and Trinadad and Tobago, Monday's draw earned New Zealand's first point at the tournament since a 3-1 win over Columbia in Wellington in 2008 in the inaugural event.

Daisy Cleverley scored first for the Young Football Ferns game's in the 69th minute with a fierce left-footed drive from just outside the Paraguay area, after beating two players.

But Paraguay equalised with six minutes left through a header off a corner from defender Sheryl Barrios.

The New Zealanders face Spain on Thursday morning and end pool play against Japan.
