A-League finals race still wide open

7:17 am on 3 March 2014

Just six games remain until the A-League football finals and the race for a top-six finish is wide open with every team still in contention for the playoffs.

Two months ago, no one would have dared predict the Melbourne Heart would be in the finals hunt.

But five straight wins have well and truly revived their chances with Saturday's 4-0 defeat of Melbourne Victory lifting them off the foot of the ladder and four points outside the top six.

Perth have taken up residence at the bottom of the table after their 3-1 drubbing away to league leaders Brisbane on Friday, but even they're still a shot sitting seven points away from a finals berth.

Second placed Western Sydney relinquished a chance to bridge the gap between them and the Roar, their 2-0 loss to Newcastle on Sunday leaving them seven points adrift of top spot.

Sydney FC are left hanging on to sixth-place after their 2-1 loss to Central Coast, which keeps the Mariners in fourth.

The Phoenix are 7th but hot on Sydney's heels, just two points behind the Sky Blues, heading into their clash with bottom placed Perth in Wellington on Sunday.
