The New South Wales Swifts have overcome a seven goal second-quarter deficit to beat the West Coast Fever 54-51 in the opening round of the trans-Tasman netball competition in Sydney this afternoon.

Tipped as the team to beat in a players and coaches poll, Swifts were made to fight hard by the Perth based side which has significantly strengthened their roster in the off season.

The teams were locked at 43-43 at the start of the final quarter but the Swifts scored six of the first seven goals to hold out the Fever who got to within two inside the last two minutes.
