American Lauryn Williams has become just the third woman to medal in both Summer and Winter Games after steering the United States to second place in Olympic bobsleigh.

Canada's Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse defended their title, with Williams and Elana Meyers second.

Williams, a silver medallist in the 2004 Athens Olympics 100m and part of the 2012 gold-medal relay squad in London, was the brakewoman on USA-1 team.

Had she won, Williams would have been the first woman to win gold in both Summer and Winter Games.

The other women to have achieved medals in summer and winter are Christa Luding of East Germany in speed skating and cycling and Canada's Clara Hughes in cycling and speed skating.

The USA-2 team of Jamie Greubel and Aja Evans won bronze.
