The New Zealand cricket captain Brendon McCullum has brought up the country's first triple century in the second and final Test against India in Wellington.

Just the over before, debutant Jimmy Neesham hit his first Test century. Neil Wagner was not out at the other end for two.

Two balls later McCullum, who batted for more than 12 hours, was caught behind for 302.

The 32-year-old had resumed on 281 and brought up the milestone with a late cut to surpass the 299 that Martin Crowe scored against Sri Lanka on the same ground in 1991.

The home side began the fifth day on 571 for six, a lead of 325 runs with McCullum unbeaten on 281.

New Zealand are 1-0 up in the two-match series.
