The English Premier League football club West Bromwich Albion has appointed former Real Betis boss Pepe Mel as their new head coach.

The 50-year-old Spaniard replaces Steve Clarke, who was sacked last month.

Under caretaker manager Keith Downing, the Baggies have improved to be four points above the relegation zone.

Mel, who was himself sacked by Betis last month, has been appointed for 18 months.

Downing will remain in charge for Saturday's match away to Southampton, with Mel watching from the stands before taking charge of his first match as Baggies boss in the home game against Everton at the Hawthorns on Monday week.
