The Auckland Classic tennis tournament has suffered a major upset with the number one-seeded Italian, Roberta Vinci, knocked out by the 16 year-old Croatian, Ana Konjuh, 3-6 6-4 6-2 in the first round.

Vinci looked comfortable in the first set, but was rattled by the wild-card in the second, as she dropped serve early and struggled to get back into the match.

Playing in her first Women's Tennis Association event, Konjuh showed composure in the third set and used her powerful serve to close out the match.

She plays the American, Lauren Davis, in the second round, who beat the sole New Zealander, Marina Erakovic, in straight sets earlier in the day.
