Veteran sports broadcaster broadcaster David Coleman has died at the age of 87.

Coleman, who covered 11 Olympic Games and six football World Cups for the BBC, passed away after a short illness.

Coleman presented some of British television's leading sporting programmes, including Grandstand and Sportsnight, and was the host of the Question of Sport quiz show for 18 years.

He was awarded an Order of the British Empire in 1992 and retired from the BBC in 2000, after the Sydney Olympics.

Remembered chiefly for his work as an athletics commentator, Coleman worked at the BBC for almost 50 years, covering 11 Olympic Games and six football World Cups.

Coleman joined the BBC in 1954 and was affectionately known for on-air blunders that became known as 'Colemanballs'.

In the year of his retirement, he became the first broadcaster to receive an Olympic Order medal to recognise his contribution to the Olympic movement.
