World Cup drama beckons - but not in Amman

10:24 am on 14 November 2013

Uruguay have all but booked a place at next year's football World Cup finals with a thumping 5-0 away win over Jordan, in the first leg of their playoff in Amman.

Edinson Cavani led the twice champions to the rout, the Paris St Germain striker scoring a brilliant free kick and having a hand in two other goals as the South Americans' firepower proved too much for their Asian opponents.

Jordan are ranked 64 places behind Uruguay in 70th by FIFA.

The teams, who finished fifth in South American and Asian qualifying, will face off again in the second leg next week in Montevideo.

Iceland, Ethiopia and Burkina Faso, runners-up to Nigeria in this year's African Nations Cup, are aiming for a first appearance on the big stage.

The pick of the four European playoffs is the tie between Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal and Zlatan Ibrahimovic's Sweden, who meet in Lisbon on Saturday morning and Stockholm next Wednesday.

Iceland, with a population of 320,000, would be the smallest nation ever to qualify for the World Cup if they beat Croatia.
