Coach Shane McLeod hasn't had his top squad together since the Olympic Games in Bejing and says the Black Sticks were a bit rusty at first, with the game beginning a frenetic pace.
But he says once they settled down they created plenty of chance and scored some good goals.
Striker Simon Child with two and Joel Baker scored from the field for the Black Sticks who led 1-0 at half-time.
The second test is in Palmerston North on Tuesday night and the series finishes in Taupo on Sunday afternoon.
It's the final stage of preparations for the Oceania Cup tournament against Australia and Samoa at the end of the month in Invercargill.
