The All Black first-five Dan Carter has scored all Canterbury's points in their 22-16 provincial rugby championship win over Auckland at Eden Park.
Three Carter penalties saw Canterbury to a 9-0 lead at half-time.
Then just after Paul Williams scored to put Auckland ahead 16-12 with about 15 minutes to go, Carter finished a Tim Bateman break with a try.
His conversion and a fifth penalty after he was late tackled sealed the defending champions' first win.
Earlier Wellington joined Southland on top of the table with a 21-13 win over Hawkes Bay in Napier and Wakato beat Manawatu 30-22 in Hamilton.
