Casey Williams still stunned

Netball New Zealand has appointed Casey Williams as the new captain of the Silver Ferns.

Coach Ruth Aitken says the 24-year-old Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic defender a remarkable athlete and a formidable competitor who leads by example.

But Williams says she wasn't sure what to expect when Aitken called and thought she might have been in trouble.

She says the captaincy's a big surprise and she' still a bit stunned to be taking over frokm Julie Seymour who's retired.

Casey Williams leads a squad of 15 with another four players invited into next months trial before

the 12 players to play a World Seven are named on the 21st of August.

Aitken has named a squad 15, with the Northern Mystics captain Temepara George back after a two year absence and new-comers Camilla Lees from the Central Pulse and Charlotte Kight of the Canterbury Tactix.

The rest of the squad is: Liana Barrett-Chase, Wendy Telfer, Katrina Grant, Sheryl Scanlan (Southern Steel), Maree Bowden, Anna Thompson (Tactix) Paula Griffin (Pulse), Joline Henry, Laura Langman, Maria Tutaia and Irene van Dyk (Magic),

Up to three further players may be added to the squad after the Silver Ferns trial in late August and

Erika Burgess (Steel), Jodi Tod and Jess Tuki (Magic) and Larissa Willcox (Tactix) have been invited into the trial.
