IOC considers action over world champ's gay comments

12:12 pm on 5 September 2013

The International Olympic Committee will consider taking action against pole vault world champion Yelena Isinbayeva, a Youth Olympics ambassador, after her comments in support of Russia's new homosexual laws.

Isinbayeva, a double Olympic champion is also the ceremonial mayor of the Olympic village at next year's Sochi 2014 winter Games, has been critical of foreign athletes' reaction to Russia's gay law.

The law on propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations makes it illegal to expose minors to information that portrays gay relationships as normal or attractive.

The IOC president Jacque Rogge, who steps down next week, hasn't elaborated on what kind of action and when it may be taken, but has ruled out pressing the Russian government further on the matter.
