Opening round at US Open washed out

8:49 am on 19 June 2009

Heavy rain has washed out most of the opening round at the US Open golf championship at Bethpage State Park in New York.

Only half the field had teed off and the earliest starters had completed only 11 holes before play was suspended, then called off for the day nearly four hours later.

Four players led at one under par, and the only New Zealander to tee off Michael Campbell was one over par after 4 holes, alongside the hot favourite Tiger Woods who'd played just 6 holes.
