Knights hold on for victory in the NRL

Newcastle held off a stunning second half fightback to beat the ladder-leading Bulldogs 22-14 in a National Rugby League match marked by controversial video referee rulings.

Jarrod Mullen was the star for the victors with a dominant display, but it was almost not to be as the blue and whites mounted a courageous comeback.

Down 20-0 at half-time, the Bulldogs charged back into the contest with three tries in the space of nine minutes.

But with one seemingly fair try disallowed and another controversially awarded against them, the Canberra Bulldogs could not grind out the victory they needed to share top place on the table with the Broncos and St George.

The Dragons are top after crushing Penrith 38-10, while the Sharks ducked a 10th straight defeat with a 13-10 win over Parramatta.

The Sharks remain last however, with 15th-placed Sydney Roosters one of six teams to enjoy a bye.

The Warriors beat Wests Tigers, breaking their three-match losing streak, 14-0 in Auckland.
