The women's number one Dinara Safina couldn't have made a better start to her campaign at the French Tennis Open.

Russia's world number one, and last year's runner up whitewashed Britain's Anne Keothovong 6-0 6-0, in just over an hour.

But the men's number one Rafael Nadal was kept on court almost 2-1/2 hours before beating the Brazilian Marcos Daniel. Nadal has never lost at Roland Garros, and he's bidding for his 5th straight French Open title.

The second seed Roger Federer clinicially despatched the Spaniard Alberto Martin 6-4 6-3 6-2.
